Macros That Don't Fit into Your Diet

Why Sugar is Not Your Best Friend

*Discover which macros can’t fit into your diet and why sugar is not your best friend and can be obstructing your fat loss goals!

If It Fits Your Macros or IIFYM

IIFYM is a huge diet trend, extremely popular among bodybuilders, cross fitters, and models looking for a leaner physique. IIFYM or If It Fits Your Macros is also known as Flexible Dieting and is a diet which requires you to monitor and calculate not only the daily calorie goals, but also the number of calories you are getting from each of the macro nutrient groups including protein, carbohydrates, and fat.

IIFYM allows you to enjoy some of your favourite food, as long as it fits into your calorie and macro goals. So, let’s take a look at the macros that don’t fit into your diet!

Macros That Don't Fit into Your Diet

  • Grains and Starch – You need to avoid bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, unless immediately post workout. Pies, buns, etc, should be completely eliminated. For instance, if you are on a low carb diet for fat loss, you should stick to mostly sources such as whole grains, barley, oats, chia seeds, quinoa, and bulgur. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes are fine as they are rich in antioxidants the body needs.
  • Sugar – Avoid soft drinks, sports drinks, packaged fruit juice, candy, cakes, ice cream, pastries, breakfast cereals, pies, and plain sugar. You should reduce the sweeteners as well. Always read the nutritional labels as sugar can appear as honey, fructose, corn syrup, lactose, molasses, and cane juice.
  • Beer – Beer is like consuming bread. As a matter of fact, it is much worse. The bread has fibre to help with the bowel movements, while the beer is quickly absorbed in your body and can cause a chaotic situation in the digestive system.
  • Milk and Juice – Many types of milks and most fruit juices are both high in carbs and they can stimulate sugar spikes in the blood. Try to avoid or reduce them in your diet.

Why Sugar Is Not Your Best Friend

According to research, high sugar intake is associated with heart disease, increased rates of obesity, and cancer. Many fitness professionals and experts recommend eliminating or reducing sugar intake in order to optimize health body composition.

Sugar brings extra calories which have extremely little effect on the satiety (the feeling of satisfaction after a meal). If you are consuming lots of extra calories and you are still feeling hungry, prepare to gain some weight.
