HIIT Training VS. Running

This picture shows an EXTREME example of the differences between a marathoner and a sprinter. Notice the sprinter carries much more muscle and is athletic looking, where as the runner looks as though he has little to no muscle. This is a perfect example of what HIIT training does. Although steady state does burn more fat relative to glycogen when going for a walk, what we care about is total fat burn. At higher intensities you are burning more fat even though the fat/glycogen ratio is lower. HIIT also creates an afterburn effect known as EPOC or exercise post oxygen consumption, you fire up your metabolism and continue to burn calories up to 24 hours after you session is complete. So this type of exercise would be very ideal for someone who sits at a desk all day.
